Ready to gain traction in your job search? DCL #68

Published 21 days ago • 3 min read

“I’m not seeing the traction I want on my job search. It’s been so hard to land offers in this environment.”

Feeling like you’re riding a roller coaster on your job search?

I got you.

Yes, the job market has shifted away from an employee’s market (think back to COVID years and how easy it was to land a new role in the talent shortage) into an employer's market. This means that talented job seekers like you have to put in extra work to sell their skill sets to an employer.

It’s so discouraging to pour your heart into an interview process, to hear “no” or worse get ghosted at the end.

If this is you, I’ve got you.

Here are 4 strategies to level out your job search and get results.

1. Get good at identifying what's not working and then change it.

We all know that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over again.

And you most definitely are not insane. This is why it’s important to become analytical and objective about what’s not working in your job search. Take into account, you only control 50% of the variables, but that’s still a lot inside of your control.

After every interview;

  • Write down every question that was asked.
  • Analyze how you answered it and what you could have done differently to better sell your experiences, given the hiring manager’s expectations of a successful hire.
  • Practice reframing your stories to focus on the impact you made and why your past result is relevant to the hiring manager and their goals.

Ask yourself;

  • Did you go deep enough?
  • Did you paint a complete picture of the results you’ll help the hiring manager achieve and when?
  • Did you demonstrate that you’re a cultural fit?
  • Did you engage in deep discussion about the role and objectives?
  • Did you ask insightful questions?

Use these questions to determine how you can get 1% better for the next interview.

2. Build in a Win Reflection.

The job search has high highs and low lows. It’s so easy to get caught up in the objective (landing a new role) and miss the important things that are happening along the way.

With that in mind, I recommend that my clients keep a weekly wins journal to document forward motion towards landing a new role.

  • Crafted a new way to position your skills that resonates more with employers? Win
  • Updated your resume to reflect this new positioning? Win
  • Spoke with 3 people who have leads for new roles? Win

None of the activities are the end goal, but they’re important steps to getting there.

Let’s celebrate that.

3. Expect rejection.

In sports, if you know you’re going to get hit and are able to tense your muscles to absorb the impact, it hurts less.

In the same way, if you approach the job search with the realistic expectation that you’ll receive a “no” along the way, you’ll be ready for it. And, it won’t take you by surprise.

Sure, it’ll still hurt, but if you recognize that all “no’s” can actually be signposts to help you discover the ultimate, best-suited place for you, you’ll be more likely to accept it faster and move forward without getting stuck.

Forward motion on the job search is key.

4. Don't consider your job search complete until you've started in the role.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen offers get rescinded due to business constraints before a hire even starts. Generally, I’ve seen this happen more for roles that have a future start date that are more than 2-3 months away.

If this is you, don’t stop networking, interviewing and keeping your options open. It probably feels like your signed job offer gives you security and it may, but don’t take the risk. Keep your options open until day 1 in the role.

Remember, you've got this!

“I’m at a crossroads in my career and I’m not sure what to do next. What would you suggest I do to figure this out?” I've had five very different careers since I left undergrad. Each time I changed, I had to reinvent myself. I started out as a brand marketer at a global CPG company working on products you use every day in your kitchen and laundry room. Then, I transitioned into management consulting and led projects with leadership teams at Fortune 500 companies. Next, I co-founded a startup...
