I spoke to a client this week - let’s call him Dan. Dan trained as a product manager, built a solid career over the last seven years, and was known for delivering. But now, he’s hit a wall. He told me,

“I can’t imagine doing this for another year, let alone 30.”

He’s not panicking, but he’s stuck. And asking a question more people should be asking:

“What comes next - and is it worth making a change this far in?”

Let’s name what this moment really is

If you’re waking up each day feeling disengaged or unmotivated at work, you’re not the only one.

This moment often shows up quietly. You’re still delivering, still showing up - but the spark is gone. You’ve worked hard for years. You’ve built financial stability, maybe even have a mortgage. You’re supporting a family. You’ve built a reputation and a rhythm. And now you’re asking yourself: Is this still it?

Over 60% of professionals say they want a career change. Only 13% actually make one.

After 10–15 years, changing direction can feel risky. But here’s the truth: this is a pivot point. Not a failure. It’s an opportunity to get intentional about what you want next.

You’ve outgrown something. That’s not a crisis. That’s evolution.

Why it’s so hard to move

You’ve built stability - and that’s a good thing. But stability can also make change feel harder than it is.

You might be thinking:

  • “I don’t want to start over.”
  • “I’m not sure what I’d even do next.”
  • “What if I regret walking away?”

One prospect said it best:

“I’m motivated to change my trajectory now so I don’t wake up in 10 years with career regret.”

That’s the shift. You don’t have to wait until burnout hits hard. You can re-evaluate now - and redirect with purpose.

What’s actually possible (and how to start)

Let’s talk about what change really looks like:

1. You’re not starting from scratch - you’re starting from experience

You’ve delivered results, led initiatives, built systems, and solved problems. That’s value you can carry into something new.

Start by listing the accomplishments, moments, and roles where you’ve driven results - even if they weren’t tied to a formal title. Look for repeat patterns: leadership, communication, strategy, implementation. These are often transferable across industries.

Your skills are likely more transferable than you think.

2. You can pivot wider than you realize

I worked with a scientist who wanted to leave the lab. She didn’t see how her background would translate.

We identified her project management skills, supported her through a certification program, and reframed her story for interviews.

She landed a PM role with a 20% increase in salary. Same person, different packaging. Better fit.

If you’re exploring other directions, start by asking:

  • What parts of your day energize you?
  • What values do you want to see reflected in your next role?
  • What kind of problems do you enjoy solving?

You’re not just changing jobs - you’re aligning work with who you are now.

3. You don’t have to do this alone

Making a change is easier with a process and a plan.

Job seekers are 2.67x more likely to find a new role when they have consistent support, structure, and accountability. That could be a coach, a mentor, or a community that helps you stay focused and moving forward.

To Dan - and anyone sitting in that quiet, unsettled place:

You’re not at a dead end. You’re at a decision point.

You’ve built experience. You’ve earned options. There’s no rule that says you have to stay where you are. And no reason to assume a pivot means going backward.

You can move forward - strategically, confidently, and on your terms.

P.S.

You’re not behind. You’re not broken. You’re just ready for something different - and that deserves your attention.
