Embrace the Pause

As the year winds down, many of us finally get a chance to slow down before 2025 begins.

It's time to take that *Big Breath* before the New Year hits.

Personally, I love this "in-between" time and always book off lots of moments to slip away to a coffee shop to reflect, write and plan. No one is really looking to you to "produce" during the back-half of December so it feels like bonus time!

Embrace it!

If you're currently in a career transition, the holiday season can be more than just a time to be with family and friends…

…it can be a valuable opportunity to reflect, recharge, and plan your next steps to dive in prepared for your January job search.

With this in mind, I wanted to take the opportunity to share my favorite ways to use this downtime to get ahead and feel in control of your January Job Search.

So without further ado, here are my 3 best tips to not only enjoy this downtime, but also get ahead of the January Job Search Rush - taken from my personal practices and my clients.

1. Use Holiday Downtime for Career Reflection and Goal-Setting

The end of the year is the perfect time to take a step back and think about your career journey. Where are you now, and where do you want to be?

Consider these questions:

  • What accomplishments or moments have made you most proud this year?
  • Which skills do you want to develop further?
  • What are your professional goals for the next 6-12 months?

Data shows that 83% of professionals who set specific career goals are more likely to achieve them. Use this quieter period to dream a little and outline your top priorities - whether that’s landing a new role, building a new skill set, or shifting into a different industry.

You’ll never be able to shift into something new without being able to “see” it first. Take this time to imagine what your best future could look like.

2. Recharge to Return Energized

In nature, winter is an intentional season of hibernation. It’s time to slow down and rest. We weren’t wired to stay in a “go-go” mode forever.

Remember, a well-rested mind is more creative and resilient.

Here are some ideas to help you unplug and recharge.

  • Unplug for a day: Take a full day away from screens and focus on activities that bring you joy - read a book, go for a walk, or spend time with loved ones.
  • Set your job search aside: Take intentional time off from your job search. This might sound counterintuitive, but I find that by time-boxing your job search activities and staying strict with those boundaries, you can still get things done, but they won’t take over your break.
  • Invest in rest: Dr. Sandra Dalton writes about the 7 different types of rest that we each need to fully recharge - rest is truly more than just sleep. Identify what types of rest you need and book time to engage in those activities.

3. Create a Vision Board

The holiday season is also a great time for introspective exercises that can clarify your next career steps. Here is one of my favorite ideas to help guide your transition:

Create a Vision Board for the New Year: Get creative and put together a vision board that represents your career aspirations. Include images, words, and symbols that reflect your goals, such as landing a leadership role, building a new network, or mastering a new skill.

Studies show that visualization can boost motivation and focus, making you more likely to reach your career objectives. Keep your vision board somewhere visible as a daily reminder of what you’re working toward.

Remember, this doesn’t have to be a vision board for the next 3 months (although it could be!), but this is an exercise to help guide your next few years. You’ll be surprised at how this activity will subconsciously move you towards your goals.

This holiday season, take a break—but make it meaningful. By using this time to reflect, rest, and refocus, you’ll be ready to tackle the new year with energy and clarity.

Wishing you a restful holiday and a successful year ahead!

Until next week,

Beckie

One of the first questions I ask my clients in a coaching session is, “What is the salary range you’re hoping for in your next role?” Most people don’t take too long answering this question. However, my follow up question causes ALL my clients to pause. Here’s what it is. “If you were handed the opportunity of your dreams with a big upward trajectory, what is the lowest salary you’d be willing to accept today?” Very few clients have an answer to this question right away. Here’s why I ask that...

Okay story time… If you’ve been around my coaching practice for some time, you know that I think the world of my husband. We've journeyed through a lot together and I remember one particularly stressful career pivot… I was deciding if I should leave my steady management consulting role to join an early-stage startup as a Co-Founder. I found myself stuck after building multiple financial models, talking to advisors and flip flopping about whether to say “Yes” or “No”. Want to know what sealed...

Ever felt overwhelmed and alone in your job search? You too? Phew! I’m glad I’m not the only one who has been there. After working with hundreds of professionals from around the world (and running my own job past searches), I’ve found that one of the most impactful ways to keep your skills sharp, expand your network, and even gain new insights for your own job search is by giving back. It may seem counterintuitive in a time when you’re trying to stabilize your own life - but let me tell you -...
