4 Steps to Write Your Value Proposition

Before a hiring manager will say yes to hiring you, they need to understand why YOUR unique skills, experiences and perspective is the right fit for the job.

Whose job is it to communicate that?

Yours.

That’s why understanding your triple threat is so important before you start networking, applying for a job and especially, interviewing.

To convince a hiring manager that you’ll solve their problems faster and better than the candidate sitting next to you, you need to define why your past experience, skillset and ideas make you the top candidate.

Once you’ve crafted your value proposition, then it’s time to practice.

Flawless delivery is key here.

The other reason why practicing your value proposition is so important is that you’ll begin to believe that what you bring to the table is pretty special. You’ll gain confidence and confidence is key for an interview.

Here's a Simple Formula to Help You Develop Your Value Proposition

Value Proposition = [Your Skills/Expertise] + [Target Audience] + [Specific Results/Impact] + [Unique Qualities/Attributes]

Let’s break this down:

  1. Your Skills/Expertise: Identify the key skills and areas of expertise that are relevant to the job you’re targeting.
  2. Target Audience: Define who you are speaking to. Is it a specific industry, hiring managers, or companies? Understanding your audience helps tailor your message.
  3. Specific Results/Impact: Highlight tangible results or impacts you’ve achieved in past roles. Think about numbers, percentages, or specific projects.
  4. Unique Qualities/Attributes: Include any qualities or attributes that set you apart from other candidates. What makes you unique?

Example: A Data Scientist's Value Proposition

Skills/Expertise: Advanced analytics, machine learning, data visualization
Target Audience: Tech companies looking to enhance data-driven decision-making
Specific Results/Impact: Developed a predictive model that increased customer retention by 15% in 3 months
Unique Qualities/Attributes: Strong communication skills that translate complex data into actionable strategies

Complete Value Proposition:

“I am a data scientist with expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, and data visualization. I specialize in helping tech companies enhance their data-driven decision-making. In my previous role, I developed a predictive model that increased customer retention by 15% within 3 months of deployment. My strong communication skills enable me to translate complex data insights into actionable business strategies, ensuring alignment between technical teams and business objectives.”

How to Use This Formula:

  1. Identify Your Skills: List your top skills relevant to the roles you’re targeting.
  2. Define Your Audience: Determine who your ideal employers are and what they need.
  3. Quantify Your Impact: Think of specific examples from your past that demonstrate your skills and their impact.
  4. Highlight Your Uniqueness: What makes you stand out from other candidates?

By following this formula, you can create a compelling value proposition that effectively conveys your strengths and potential contributions to prospective employers.

Now that you’ve got the formula, it’s time to put it into practice!

In the last email, we talked about the point where your job starts running your life. Where you’re performing.Still delivering. But the intensity doesn’t let up - and your work starts to take over more than it should. For a lot of people, that shows up as a gradual shift: You’re doing everything you’re supposed to be doing. But it’s no longer sustainable. And you’re not enjoying it the way you used to. The next problem most people run into isn’t a lack of options. It’s that they don’t have the...

A client I’m working with is in a senior marketing role at a global bank. "I'm tired," she told me. "My work has taken over my personal life and I'm not sure what to do. I know in my bones that it's time to change jobs, but I don't know to what?" "And I don't want to lose out on the leverage I've built." She’s built her career inside this organization.Grown her scope.Developed into a strong leader. From the outside, everything looks like it’s working. But she’s reached a point where it’s no...

I had a conversation last week with a Senior Manager who has worked in sales his whole career. His leaders kept telling that he's on track to become the next Director. The feedback was always consistent: “You’re doing great.”“Just keep going.”“It’s coming.” Unfortunately, he had yet to see this promotion. He told me, “It’s all well and good to say I’m on track to be the next Director. But it’s not happening. There aren’t roles for me to step into - and realistically, nothing here is opening...
