Too many options = no progress

Last week a client told me:

“I feel like I’m circling. I want a new role, but I'm not sure where to land.”

She’s not underqualified. She’s not unmotivated. She’s just stuck in what psychologists call “choice overload.”

The data behind the fog

A 2023 report from McKinsey found that professionals in transition often stall not because they lack direction - but because they’re trying to maintain too much optionality.

The paradox? The more choices we try to keep open, the less capable we feel of making any real move. (That’s choice paralysis - and it’s real.)

And in a job market this competitive, confusion costs you credibility. We can't expect a hiring manager to do the work for us, we have to articulate why we're the best fit first.

What happens when you’re unclear?

• Your resume gets watered down

• Your networking outreach sounds vague

• You avoid making bold asks because you’re unsure what you want

In short: You’re working hard, but you’re signaling hesitation.

(this is also where LinkedIn job search doom scrolling starts to take over)

A tool to clear the fog

Here’s the shift that works: We zoom in on two key areas -

âś… Immediate Career Priorities Get clear on what matters now: salary, schedule, scope, values. This gets the noise out of your head.

âś… Future You Vision What do you want your career, financial picture and life to look like 7 years from now? This anchors your next move in long-term alignment, not short-term emotion.

This is what separates “exploring” from strategic momentum.

Practical Insight: Clarity = Relevance

Here’s a shift I teach every client:

Hiring isn’t about being the most qualified. It’s about being the most relevant - right now.

That means:

• Understanding what a hiring manager needs in the next 90–180 days

• Translating your past wins into future impact

• Speaking in outcomes, not just skillsets

And you can’t do that if you’re hedging every direction.

Truth time

If you don’t know what you want and why - you won’t land the role you actually want. If you’re only applying online, you’re blending in with everyone else.

But if you know how to build clarity, connect with the right people, and position yourself as the solution?

You’ll never feel powerless in your career again.

That’s freedom. That’s strategy. That’s what my clients walk away with every single time.

P.S.

If this landed, forward it to a colleague or friend who’s quietly circling in the same fog. They’re probably more open to clarity than they’ve let on.
