You went in with one intention and walked out with a completely different outcome?
You too?
Phew, so glad I'm not alone.
I went into a job offer negotiation earlier in my career - prepped and ready to go.
When I brought up the topic, the HR rep listened intently and then said, "Sorry, the offer stands as is. Accept it or reject it. We don't have any room to negotiate."
I really wanted the job.
I didn't know what else to say.
So I closed my notebook and accepted the role.
Despite the fact that I had DATA to show that the offer undervalued my skills.
Talk about discouraging.
Unfortunately, I left the negotiation far too late in the process. What should I have done instead?
Throughout each interview, in every interaction, I should have emphasized my WORTH.
And not just my worth, but what my skills and past experiences would mean for the COMPANY.
(Emphasize the “what’s in it for me” principle)
I could have signalled what my skillset is worth in the market.

Once a Hiring Manager is primed, it’ll be MUCH easier to have a discussion about salary and compensation package.
While every person’s situation is unique, I’ve outlined the 8 steps to follow for a successful negotiation.
Now, before we dive in, I want to say one thing.
There are several variables at play here:

A Director I worked with recently felt stuck. Her performance reviews were excellent. Her team delivered consistently. Projects ran smoothly. Leadership trusted her with complex work. She was the person people relied on. But when promotion conversations came up, the answer was always the same. “Keep doing what you’re doing.” At first that feedback sounded positive. Then it started to feel confusing. If everything was going well, why wasn’t the next level happening? Many strong professionals...
A Senior Manager told me recently that promotions at her company felt completely unpredictable. One year a peer advanced quickly.Another year someone with similar results was passed over. Sometimes leadership talked about performance.Other times the conversation focused on “leadership presence” or “readiness.” From her perspective, the criteria kept changing. Her question was simple. “How do people actually get promoted around here?” At the Director and VP level, this is one of the most...
A Director told me something interesting recently. “I know a lot of people,” she said. Over the past decade she had worked across several companies. She had led cross-functional projects. She had built relationships with partners, peers, and former colleagues across the industry. Her LinkedIn network was large. Her reputation was strong. And yet when she started thinking about her next career move, she felt like she had very few options. No introductions were coming in. No opportunities were...
