Welcome to Week 4 in our job offer negotiation series. I'm so excited to dive into our content for today 🎉

We're tackling Part Two of “How to Prepare for a Job Offer Negotiation”.

Today we're going to dive into Your Data-Driven Story.

My client, Amanda, followed these exact steps and negotiated at $35,000 increase to her total compensation package.

Remember - the job offer negotiation is won and lost in the preparation process.

There are three IMPORTANT steps that every job seeker needs to take to get ready for a job offer:

  1. Your Mindset - we covered last week
  2. Your Data-Driven Story - this week’s topic
  3. Your Confidence - next week!

If you’re missing any one of these steps, your chances of getting what you want significantly decreases.

So let’s dive in!

Ready?

Let’s go!

Your Data-Driven Story

Let me tell you more about my client Amanda, who was recently offered a job as a marketing manager in San Francisco. Amanda was excited about the opportunity but knew that negotiating for a better offer was essential to ensure she was being fairly compensated for her skills and experience.

We worked together to prepare her for the negotiation.

Here are the specific steps Amanda took to prepare for her job offer negotiation:

  • Researched salary expectations: Amanda researched the salaries of comparable marketing roles in SF. She used resources such as LinkedIn, job search websites, industry-specific salary surveys and spoke to other recruiters to gather data and inform her salary expectations.

  • Prepared her case: We worked together to select specific examples of Amanda's skills and accomplishments that demonstrated her value and warranted an increase in base salary and bonus. *Always* use data and metrics to support your negotiation narrative.

  • Identified key priorities: Amanda made a list of her priorities, including acceptable salary range, specific benefits that were important to her, work-life balance requests, and professional development opportunities. This helped her prioritize her goals and stay focused during the negotiation.

  • Practiced negotiating: Amanda practiced negotiating with me (her coach) to gain confidence and improve her negotiation skills. We worked through different scenarios and determined how best to respond. Amanda said these exercises helped her feel confident and calm during the actual negotiation. Practice makes perfect!

  • Prepared for objections: Amanda anticipated common objections, such as budget constraints or company policies. This allowed her to prepare counterarguments and respond confidently during the negotiation.

  • Follow up: After the negotiation, Amanda followed up with the employer to express her gratitude and confirm the agreed-upon terms in writing while she waited for the revised offer.

The result?

Armed with her research and negotiation skills, Amanda negotiated a $35,000 increase to her annual compensation (salary + increased bonus %) per year, along with a signing bonus and an additional week of vacation time. She also negotiated a flexible work arrangement that allowed her to work from home one day per week.

"I learned that negotiating a job offer isn't just about getting a higher salary, but also about negotiating for benefits and work arrangements that can improve your overall quality of life."

So, if you're in a similar situation as Amanda, remember to:

  1. Do your research
  2. Prepare your case
  3. Identify your priorities
  4. Practice negotiating
  5. Prepare for objections
  6. Follow up

By taking these steps, you can significantly increase your chances of getting the job offer you want.

Next week we’ll dive into the final negotiation preparation step. You'll want to save this newsletter so you never walk into a negotiation unprepared.
